How this is calculated

Australian GST is a flat 10% added to the price of most goods and services.

To add GST: multiply the GST-exclusive amount by 1.1. The GST is 10% of the original amount.

To remove GST: divide the GST-inclusive total by 11 to get the GST component, or by 1.1 to get the price before GST.

Assumptions & notes
  • Australian GST has been a flat 10% since 1 July 2000. Some goods and services are GST-free (e.g. most basic food, some health and education) or input-taxed; this calculator assumes the standard 10% applies.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add GST to a price? +

Multiply the GST-exclusive amount by 1.1. For example, $100 plus 10% GST becomes $110, of which $10 is GST. Use the 'Add GST' mode above.

How do I work out the GST included in a price? +

Divide the GST-inclusive amount by 11 to get the GST component, or divide by 1.1 to get the GST-exclusive price. For example, a $110 total contains $10 of GST and $100 ex-GST. Use the 'Remove GST' mode above.

What is the GST rate in Australia? +

GST is a flat 10% and has been since it was introduced on 1 July 2000.

Is everything subject to GST? +

No. Some items are GST-free (such as most basic food, and certain health, education and childcare services) and some are input-taxed. This tool assumes the standard 10% rate applies.

Are these figures exact? +

The maths is exact for a standard 10% rate, but individual invoices may round GST to the nearest cent per line item. Always check the tax invoice for the definitive amount.
